Mexico Beach is a city in Bay County, Florida. It is located 25 miles southeast of Panama City. The population was 1,060 at the 2020 census. The community was extensively damaged by Hurricane Michael on October 10, 2018.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared the community “wiped out” in the aftermath of the hurricane’s devastating impact.
Before Hurricane Michael, “the town was “old Florida,” … a collection of 50-year-old bungalows and newer vacation homes on stilts,” where tourists walked on white sand beaches.
That all changed when Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach on October 10, 2018, just before 1 p.m. local time with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour, the first Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
The City of Mexico Beach is rolling out the “Welcome to Mexico Beach” welcome mat to families, residents, visitors and more value-added local businesses.
The City of Mexico Beach is a great place to see the beautiful beach and see how clear the water is and how clean the beach is, its a great place for a day trip.
Mexico Beach is trying to recover. In the meantime, everyone can go to the municipal park, where boys and girls can could walk to and play basketball. There is a nice restaurant, a great food truck and a Subway in the gas station. Come and enjoy a day at Mexico Beach.
A recent visitor said, “We loved Mexico Beach!!! The gorgeous white sand beaches of the gulf but not the crowds of Destin. We loved relaxing in this quaint little town. There is lots of rebuilding going on from the devastation of Hurricane Michael in 2018. Come down and support their local economy.”
